Which LEGO Set for Which Age?
The age on the box tells you when a child can build on their own. Here are our pointers, age bracket by age bracket, with the themes we carry among our 650 LEGO products, in store in Caraquet and online across Canada.
1½ to 3 years DUPLO: the first bricks
Twice the size of LEGO bricks, DUPLO bricks fit in a small hand and pose no choking hazard. The sets tell a simple story: the train, the farm, the fire truck, Peppa Pig. At this age children stack, take apart, and name colours and animals. Start with a box of loose bricks, then a themed set.
4 to 5 years 4+ sets and Classic
The move to real LEGO bricks. Sets marked 4+ (in City, Friends, Disney, Marvel or Super Mario) use large pre-assembled base pieces: the child gets a result quickly and learns to follow picture instructions. Classic boxes provide bricks in every colour for free building.

6 to 8 years Worlds to build
The golden age of minifigures. City (police, firefighters, space, construction sites), Friends (Heartlake City), Creator 3-in-1 (three models in one box), Super Mario, Sonic, Animal Crossing and DREAMZzz offer sets of 100 to 500 pieces that a child builds alone in one or two sittings. It is also the age when children start mixing sets to invent their own stories.

8 to 12 years Themes, licences and first Technic sets
Builds get more complex: 500 to 1,000 pieces, mechanisms, details. NINJAGO, Minecraft, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Marvel and Speed Champions (race cars at minifigure scale) are the favourites. Small Technic sets (ages 7 and up) introduce gears and moving parts.

12 and up Teens and adults: build to display
Large Technic sets (cars, cranes, motorcycles with working gearboxes), Icons (collector cars, modular buildings, landmarks), Botanicals (bouquets, bonsai, orchids), Architecture, Art and Ideas are marked 18+: builds that span several evenings, designed to decorate a bookshelf or a desk afterwards. The best gifts for grown-ups who never stopped.

Three tips before you buy
- Aim one level up only if an adult will build with the child; otherwise, respect the age on the box to avoid frustration.
- Look at the theme before the piece count: a child who loves firefighters will build a 300-piece fire truck with more joy than a 150-piece castle.
- Plan for storage: a bin with a lid and a few resealable bags for builds in progress, with the instructions kept in a folder.
Frequently asked questions
From what age can a child play with LEGO?
DUPLO bricks are designed from 18 months: large, easy to grip and impossible to swallow. Classic LEGO bricks are recommended from age 4, with sets marked 4+ that use large starter pieces.
What does the age on the box mean?
It is the age from which a child can build the model alone by following the instructions. A younger child can do it with an adult; an older one will enjoy it if the theme appeals or the piece count is high.
LEGO City or LEGO Friends?
Both offer everyday scenes with minifigures and suit children from age 5 or 6. City is about vehicles, police, firefighters and space; Friends is about friends, animals and the places of Heartlake City. Choose by the child's interests, not by gender.
Are LEGO Technic sets too hard?
Small Technic sets (ages 7 and up) are a great entry point: gears, pistons, moving parts. Large models of 1,000 pieces and more take several hours and are aimed at teens and adults.
Which LEGO sets for adults?
The 18+ sets: Icons (cars, modular buildings, landmarks), Botanicals (bouquets and plants), Architecture and Art. They build over a few evenings and are made to be displayed.
Are bricks from different themes compatible?
Yes: all LEGO bricks have fit together since 1958, and DUPLO connects with LEGO on the large bricks. Themes can be combined to build bigger.
